I have bought more Toyotas than any other brand. There is a reason for that. They hold value, they run forever, and the auction demand never dries up. If you have a Tacoma, you are probably sitting on more money than you think.

What I See When I Buy a Toyota

I have bought thousands of Toyotas over my career. More than any other brand. The reason is simple: auction buyers fight over them. A clean Tacoma with reasonable miles sells itself. A Camry with 150,000 miles still has a floor price that surprises people.

The mistake I see most Toyota sellers make is assuming every model holds value the same way. A Tacoma and a Mirai are both Toyotas, but one loses 22% in five years and the other loses 84%. I price every Toyota off real auction data for that specific model, year, and trim. Not a generic brand average.

Model breakdown

Selling a Specific Toyota Model?

Toyota Camry

2018 - 2026 · $15,000 - $28,000

The volume king. Steady depreciation at 12-15% per year. Always in demand at auction because every dealer wants one on the lot.

Common issues I see

  • Cosmetic damage kills value more than mechanical issues on Camrys
  • High-mileage units (150K+) still hold a solid floor price
  • 2018-2019 infotainment system complaints (minor impact on value)

Toyota Corolla

2018 - 2026 · $13,000 - $24,000

Affordable, reliable, and holds value better than competing compacts. The Corolla Hybrid (2026 example: $26,888) commands a small premium.

Common issues I see

  • Lower starting price means smaller absolute dollar returns
  • CVT transmission complaints on some model years
  • Basic trims depreciate faster than LE and XSE

Toyota RAV4

2019 - 2026 · $20,000 - $35,000

Top-selling SUV. The RAV4 Hybrid is the standout, holding value best at only 25% depreciation over 5 years. Non-hybrid still strong.

Common issues I see

  • Hybrid battery holds up well, rarely affects resale
  • 2019-2020 transmission hesitation complaints
  • Cosmetic damage disproportionately hurts value (buyers expect perfection)

Toyota Tacoma

2016 - 2026 · $22,000 - $38,000

Exceptional retention. Only 22% depreciation in 5 years. The 'Tacoma tax' is real: used prices stay stubbornly high because supply never meets demand.

Common issues I see

  • 8-speed transmission issues on 2016-2018 models (known problem)
  • Frame rust on older models in certain climates
  • Even with issues, demand keeps prices elevated

Toyota Prius

2016 - 2026 · $14,000 - $28,000

Strong demand driven by fuel economy. Battery concern affects roughly 15% of offers, but most hold up well past 150K miles.

Common issues I see

  • Catalytic converter theft (reduced value if replaced with aftermarket part)
  • Battery health matters above 150K miles or 8+ years
  • Gen 4 (2016-2022) styling polarizes buyers, slight demand dip vs Gen 5
What affects your offer

Does Anything on My Toyota Lower the Offer?

Cosmetic Damage on Toyotas

Impact: Toyota buyers expect near-perfect condition. A dent or scratch that barely matters on a Ford drops a Toyota's value disproportionately.

I see this constantly. A $200 door ding on a Camry can cost $800 in resale value because auction buyers compare it to the clean one in the next lane. I still buy it. I just price it accurately.

Tacoma 8-Speed Transmission (2016-2018)

Impact: Known shifting issues on early 8-speed models. Buyers are aware of it, and it affects offers.

If your Tacoma has the 8-speed issue, I factor it in, but the overall Tacoma demand is so strong that it still commands more than most trucks in the same price range.

Prius Catalytic Converter Theft

Impact: Aftermarket catalytic converters reduce value by $500 to $1,500 depending on the replacement quality.

I buy Priuses with aftermarket cats regularly. The value hit is real, but it is not a deal-breaker. If the rest of the car is solid, you will still get a fair offer.

High Mileage

Impact: Toyotas above 150K miles still have strong floor prices at auction. Unlike most brands, mileage alone does not kill the value.

A Toyota with 180,000 miles is not the same as a Nissan with 180,000 miles. The auction market knows that. I price accordingly.

Mirai and EV Depreciation

Impact: The Mirai loses up to 84% of its value. Hydrogen infrastructure issues make resale extremely difficult.

I am honest about this one. If you have a Mirai, the number is going to be low. I will still give you a firm offer, but do not expect traditional Toyota retention on a hydrogen car.

Simple process

Here is how it works.

1

Call Joe.

Tell me about your Toyota. I'll let you know where the offer should land, and we'll set up a time.

2

I come to your house.

I pull into your driveway, scan the VIN on your Toyota, run it through a professional valuation tool right there, and show you a firm, guaranteed offer on the screen. No meetup spots, no dealership visit.

3

Accept the offer, get a check.

If the number works, I write you a check before I leave. I handle all the paperwork. If it doesn't work, no pressure.

The real tradeoff

Why Sell Your Toyota to a Dealer Instead of Privately?

Toyotas are the easiest cars I buy because the auction demand is always there. A clean Tacoma sells in minutes. A Camry with reasonable miles has five buyers before it hits the block. That demand is what keeps your offer strong.

If you have been putting off selling your Toyota because you think the process is a hassle, call me. I will come to your door, give you a firm number in 20 minutes, and hand you a check on the spot. No listings, no tire-kickers, no weekend test drives with strangers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Your Toyota

Is the 'Tacoma tax' real?+
Yes. Tacomas hold value better than almost any vehicle on the market. Only 22% depreciation in 5 years. The used market demand for Tacomas consistently outpaces supply, which keeps prices elevated even at high mileage.
Does my Prius battery affect the offer?+
In most cases, no. Prius batteries hold up well past 150,000 miles. I check the actual health data during the inspection. Battery concern affects roughly 15% of offers, typically on older or very high-mileage units.
Which Toyota models hold value best?+
Tacoma is the clear winner at 22% depreciation over 5 years. RAV4 Hybrid is second at about 25%. Camry and Corolla are steady and predictable. Mirai and Venza are the weakest at 58-84% loss over 5 years.
Do you buy high-mileage Toyotas?+
All the time. A Toyota with 150,000 or even 180,000 miles still has a solid floor price at auction. The market knows these cars run well past 200,000 miles. I price off real auction demand, not a mileage cutoff.
What about catalytic converter replacement on Prius?+
If your Prius has an aftermarket catalytic converter from a theft replacement, it reduces the value by $500 to $1,500. I still buy it. The rest of the car's condition matters more than the cat alone.
Is a RAV4 Hybrid worth more?+
Yes. The RAV4 Hybrid holds value noticeably better than the standard RAV4. Only about 25% depreciation over 5 years. Hybrid demand is strong and growing. If you have one, call me before you assume the number is average.
Do you buy Toyota trucks?+
Tacomas are one of my favorite vehicles to buy. The demand never stops. I also buy Tundras. If you have a Toyota truck in any condition, I want to see it.
