Hondas are the most predictable cars I buy. The depreciation is steady, the demand at auction is always there, and most of them run forever. If you have a Civic or CR-V, you are sitting on solid value.

What I See When I Buy a Honda

I have bought thousands of Hondas over 30+ years. Civics, Accords, CR-Vs, Odysseys. They are the backbone of the used car market because buyers trust them, and that trust translates directly into stronger offers.

Honda's reputation for reliability is earned. A 2019 CR-V with 80,000 miles still commands strong money at auction because dealers know they can retail it quickly. That demand is what lets me pay you more than the average dealer offer.

Model breakdown

Selling a Specific Honda Model?

Honda Civic

2016-2024 · $18,000 - $28,000

The most popular compact in America. Holds value well because demand never dips. Clean title Civics with under 60K miles move fast.

Common issues I see

  • 1.5L turbo oil dilution (2017-2018, especially cold climate and short trips)
  • AC compressor failures on certain 2016-2017 models

Honda Accord

2016-2024 · $19,000 - $32,000

Depreciates slightly faster than the Civic because it competes with more mid-size options. Still a strong seller. The 2.0T Sport models carry a premium.

Common issues I see

  • Infotainment glitches on early 10th-gen (2018-2019)
  • CVT shudder at low speeds on some 1.5T models

Honda CR-V

2017-2024 · $22,000 - $38,000

28.9% depreciation over 5 years, 3rd best among small SUVs. The CR-V is Honda's strongest value holder and the one I buy most often.

Common issues I see

  • Oil dilution in the 1.5L turbo (2017-2018+, cold climate and short trip driving)
  • CVT needs fluid changes every 30K miles or problems start

Honda Odyssey

2018-2024 · $28,000 - $42,000

Strong family demand with limited supply. Averages $39,730 in California. The Odyssey quietly holds value better than most SUVs because Honda stopped making enough of them.

Common issues I see

  • 10-speed transmission hesitation on 2018-2020 models
  • Sliding door track issues with age
What affects your offer

Does Anything on My Honda Lower the Offer?

Oil Dilution (1.5L Turbo)

Impact: Affects 2017-2018+ CR-V and Civic models, especially in cold climates or with frequent short trips. Fuel mixes with engine oil, raising the oil level.

This lowers the offer by $500-$1,500 depending on severity and service history. Honda issued a software update that fixes most cases. If you have proof of the update, the impact is minimal.

CVT Transmission

Impact: Honda CVTs need fluid changes every 30,000 miles. Skip them and you get shuddering, hesitation, and eventually failure. Replacement runs $3,000-$4,500.

I check transmission behavior during inspection. A well-maintained CVT with fluid records does not scare me. A neglected one with 90K and no service history is a different conversation.

Engine Vibration

Impact: Certain model years develop noticeable vibration at idle, often traced to motor mounts or engine tuning. Not a safety issue, but buyers notice it.

Minor vibration is a small deduction. If the mounts are shot, it costs $400-$800 to fix, and that comes off the offer. Straightforward math.

Simple process

Here is how it works.

1

Call Joe.

Tell me about your Honda. I'll let you know where the offer should land, and we'll set up a time.

2

I come to your house.

I pull into your driveway, scan the VIN on your Honda, run it through a professional valuation tool right there, and show you a firm, guaranteed offer on the screen. No meetup spots, no dealership visit.

3

Accept the offer, get a check.

If the number works, I write you a check before I leave. I handle all the paperwork. If it doesn't work, no pressure.

The real tradeoff

Why Sell Your Honda to a Dealer Instead of Privately?

Honda builds cars that hold value because they run. A CR-V with 150,000 miles is still a viable daily driver, and buyers know it. That reliability creates steady demand at every price point, which means I can offer more for your Honda than I can for most other brands at the same age and mileage.

The gap between private sale and dealer offer on a Honda is typically 10-15%. I close most of that gap while saving you the 2-3 weeks of listing, showing, and negotiating. You keep more of your car's value without doing any of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Your Honda

Does the oil dilution issue affect my Honda's value?+
It depends on the model year and whether Honda's software update was applied. On a 2017-2018 CR-V without the fix, expect $500-$1,500 less. With the update and clean service records, the impact is minimal. I look at the actual condition, not just the recall history.
Which Honda models hold value best?+
CR-V leads the lineup with only 28.9% depreciation over 5 years, 3rd best among all small SUVs. The Civic is close behind. Odyssey holds value well because supply is limited. Accord is strong but depreciates a bit faster due to more mid-size competition.
Do you buy high-mileage Hondas?+
Yes. Hondas are built to run, and the auction market reflects that. A well-maintained Civic or CR-V with 120,000+ miles still has real value. I will give you a firm number based on actual condition, not just the odometer.
Is my Honda CR-V worth more than a Toyota RAV4?+
They trade close, but the RAV4 edges out the CR-V slightly on 5-year residual value. That said, a clean CR-V in California still commands strong money. The real question is condition, not badge. I buy both and can tell you exactly where yours falls.
What about the CVT transmission issue?+
Honda CVTs are reliable when maintained. The key is fluid changes every 30,000 miles. If you have service records showing that, the CVT is a non-issue for your offer. If the transmission is slipping or shuddering, that is a different story and I will be upfront about the deduction.
Do you buy Honda Odysseys?+
Absolutely. Odysseys are one of my favorite buys because demand outstrips supply. The average California Odyssey is worth around $39,730. If yours is clean with reasonable miles, you will like the number I give you.
