How the Payoff Works

1. I get your 10-day payoff quote.

You give me your loan info. I contact your lender and get a written 10-day payoff amount, which is the exact number it takes to clear the loan. California Vehicle Code section 11709.4 sets this up, and it's the same process every honest dealer follows.

2. I pay your lender directly.

I send the payoff straight to your bank. You never have to front the loan balance or wait for a refund. The law gives a dealer 21 days to pay the lienholder, and I handle every bit of that so it's off your plate.

3. The lien gets released through California's ELT system.

California runs a mandatory Electronic Lien and Title system, so the release is electronic. Once your lender is paid, they release the lien and the clean title comes to me. You don't chase paperwork or wait on the mail.

4. You keep the difference. Same day.

If your car is worth more than you owe, that equity is yours, and you get it the same day I buy the car, because I front the money. Carvana makes you wait 5 to 10 days, and most dealers won't cut your check until the clean title shows up weeks later. I pay you now and handle the payoff with your bank myself.

The underwater case

What If I Owe More Than It's Worth?

This is called negative equity, and it's more common than people think. It just means your loan balance is bigger than the car's value. The good news: you can still sell, as long as you cover the gap.

Here's the plain version. Say your car is worth $12,000 and you owe $14,000. That's a $2,000 shortfall. You bring that $2,000, I pay your lender the full $14,000, and the loan is closed. You walk away with the car gone and the payments off your budget, instead of pouring money into a car you don't want anymore.

There's no payoff limit either way. Whether you owe $4,000 or $40,000, I can pay it off. And because I match or beat any CarMax offer, guaranteed, you know the value side of the math is as high as it should be before you decide.

Why this is different

Selling a car with a loan, done right.

No payoff limit.

Owe $4,000 or $40,000, it doesn't matter. I pay off the loan in full and hand you the difference. The size of your balance is not a reason you can't sell.

You get paid same day.

Your equity check is same day because I front it. I handle the lender payoff and the clean-title release on the back end. Carvana makes you wait 5 to 10 days. I don't.

I pay your bank myself.

You don't send the payoff, chase the title, or wait on your lender. I contact them, pay them, and handle the ELT release. One appointment at your door and you're done.

I'll tell you the truth on negative equity.

If you're underwater, I'll show you the exact gap and what it takes to close the loan. No games, no fine print. 30 years, 50,000 cars, and a phone number that goes to me.

About Joe

One person. Real answers.

Joe

I'm Joe. Licensed dealer, 30+ years in the business. 50,000+ cars. A car with a loan on it doesn't scare me. I do it every week. I guarantee to match or beat any CarMax offer.

I'm not a call center. I'm not a chatbot. I show up, get your payoff, pay your bank, and hand you the difference. If selling doesn't make sense for your situation, I'll tell you that too. That's why I started CurbSold.

Is this for you?

Sound familiar?

Still making payments you're done with?

You want out of the loan, but you didn't know you could sell before it's paid off. You can. I get your payoff, pay the bank, and hand you whatever's left, all in one visit at your house.

Underwater and stuck?

You owe a little more than the car is worth and you feel trapped. You're not. Cover the gap, I clear the rest, and the loan is closed. Better than making payments for another year on a car you don't want.

Questions people ask before they call

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?+
Yes. You don't have to pay off the loan first. I buy cars that still have a lien on them all the time. I get a written payoff amount from your lender, pay them directly, and hand you a check for whatever equity is left over. It happens in one appointment at your house.
What if I owe more than the car is worth (negative equity)?+
That's fine, as long as you can cover the gap. If your car is worth $12,000 and you owe $14,000, there's a $2,000 shortfall. You bring that $2,000, I pay the lender the full $14,000, and the loan is cleared. You walk away with the car sold and the loan closed instead of making payments on a car you no longer want.
Do you pay the bank or do you pay me?+
Both, in the right order. I pay your lender the exact payoff amount to clear the lien, and I pay you the difference. If you have equity, that difference is your money and you get it the same day. If you're underwater, you cover the shortfall and I settle the rest with the bank.
Is there a limit on how much I can owe?+
No. There's no payoff limit. Whether you owe $4,000 or $40,000, I can pay it off. As long as the numbers work and your bank accepts a payoff, the size of the loan isn't a problem.
How fast do I get my money?+
Same day. You get your equity check the same day I buy the car, because I front the money. I handle the lender payoff and the clean-title release on the back end myself. Carvana makes you wait 5 to 10 days, and most dealers won't cut your equity check until the clean title shows up weeks later. I pay you now and deal with your bank myself.
What if my bank won't accept a third-party payoff?+
A few lenders only take a payoff from the person whose name is on the loan. That's rare, but it happens. One quick phone call to your bank tells us before I show up. If they won't take a third-party payoff, there are still ways to structure it, and I'll walk you through the options honestly.
How does the lien actually get released?+
California uses a mandatory Electronic Lien and Title system, so lien releases are electronic. Under California Vehicle Code section 11709.4, I get a written 10-day payoff quote from your lender and pay them within 21 days. Once they're paid, the lienholder releases the lien through the ELT system and the clean title comes to me. You don't have to chase any of that. I handle it.
What do I need to have for the appointment?+
Your loan account info or a recent statement so I can get the payoff amount, your registration, all the keys, and your driver's license. If you have the title it helps, but with a loan the lender usually holds it, so that's normal. I bring the rest of the paperwork and fill it out at your door.

Owe money on it?
No problem.

Call or text me with the year, make, model, and roughly what you still owe. I'll get your payoff, tell you where you stand, and come to you.
